You may want to look to Queens, NY, which is one the the five boroughs of New York City, and the largest borough in the City. There are plenty of hotels located in the Long Island City section of Queens where room are less the $200 a night, per person. The link below show a full list of the hotel in the Long Island City area.
You will find a Super Eight Hotel in the link above with rooms starting at $109 a night, per person.

You,ll spend a lot of time going back and forth across the river if you don,t stay in manhattan. I wouldn,t do it , or recommend it. manhattan offers accom. for every budget Try this site I use it every time I go home

now days it is pretty easy to find rooms in good new york hotels for much less than $200/night.
check the jolly hotel in manhattan – it is 3-4 star hotel located only steps from the Empire State Building. their rates for standard room stars at around $140/night + tax.
You can also check the Seton hotel at. its a budget hotel located on Manhattan’s east side a few blocks from the UN building. they have both private and shared bathrooms.
only one block from Central park you can find the Park Savoy hotel (www.parksavoyhotelny.com). it is also a budget hotel with nice rooms. The location is great. Rates start from about $130/night +tax
