For New Yorkers only: Where would you rather live – Hoboken or Williamsburg and why?

  • joe s posted: 29 Jun at 8:43 am

You have Williamsburg down pat. It’s hipstersville. Hoboken on the other hand is populated by people who come from other states to work in NYC, but can’t afford to live there. It’s college town feel is because most of the people living there are transients, they live there for 2 to 5 years and go on to something else.

If you are looking at Williamsburg, try Greenpoint. It still has some “traditional” NY’ers in it.

I like Williamsburg. There are a lot of hidden restaurants and bars. The place seems to be the new “village”. On the plus side there is plenty of available parking and it’s so much quieter. Overall, Brooklyn has so much more to offer from beaches to Prospect park. There are endless places to explore. You also have all the diverse ethnic neighborhoods too. I like checking out the area off of Bedford, Grand, Kent. I have not noticed the condos over there and it’s close to the water.
As for Hoboken, it reminds me of the village too. I have not visited there in years. I do recall parking to be an issue. Even if you do not have a car, your visitors might.

Williamsburg — if you had said “pseudohipsters” you would be closer to the the truth — full of neer do wells with trust funds who really don’t know @#$% about art or anything else. There are other places to look — Inwood, Greenpoint, etc.

All the above answers are good but I think the deciding factor for me would be…. friends and family in Queens & LI…

I have friends in Jersey and I visit them about once a year. If THEY didn’t work & hang out in the city, I’d never see them. Maybe I’m a bad friend, but… like you said… it’s Jersey.

Williamsburg….its still ny, and if you like to go to the city often, its a much easier commute.

You’re already identifying the “college town” feel and the “too white” phenomenon as issues before you even move to Hoboken. It sounds to me like you would get frustrated there quite quickly. The ugly new construction and hipstermania in W’burg are also problematic, but the social scene there will change somewhat as more condo-yuppies (like you) move in.

I personally would rather live in Hoboken, but then my closest friends and family are either in Jersey or near I-95. Getting to Brooklyn or even the East Side of manhattan on a weekend via path can be a multi-hour ordeal. It sounds like in your situation (assuming the commute times to work are similar?) W’burg makes more sense.

Second the suggestion below about looking at Greenpoint — but if you’re buying an inexpensive condo, it’s probably going to be in one of those garish skinny buildings, sadly.

Final argument for staying in NYC: better tap water! :)
