Cheaper than Manhattan, sure. Hoboken is pretty expensive though…I would maybe try Weehawken, Guttenberg or the Exchange Place/Newport areas of Jersey City. Please be sure to check out crime rates wherever you go using city-data.com. It’s very helpful.

Jersey has much cheaper housing but for *that* cheap you’re going to end up in the less-nice parts of Jersey City or in Newark.
You shouldn’t need a car if you are working in downtown Hoboken…several train and bus lines stop there…and you obviously save a lot of money per month if you trade car/gas/parking for a transit pass.

The new W hotel in Hoboken will be in walking distance from the PATH train station, so you might not need a car to get around. Hoboken and the nicer areas of Jersey City are as expensive as Brooklyn. You might want to try Bayonne, NJ. It is not as funky as Hoboken or those towns on the Hudson, but it fairly safe and on the light rail connecting to Hoboken. That said, your friends in the City will not come out and visit you (they never do). You won’t be that far from the City and should be able to get in when you are not working without the car.

For your price range, you will either end up in the boonies (and needing that car to get to a train station) OR you’ll end up in a dump and need to sell the car before it is stolen.
Yes, NJ is cheaper than Manhattan but if you want something decent you are looking at $1k or more per month but the studio part might help you.
Some suggestions: check Bloomfield, Clifton & Montclair. you have to watch the areas, but overall they are decent.
If you can go out farther into Morris County – Denville, Morristown, or farther like Budd Lake – you might be a little less expensive.
Good Luck!
I grew up in Bloomfield & my Mom still lives there so feel free to e-mail me with any towns and I would gladly give you my opinion (no guarantees, but an opinion might help)
